Food Forrest

Why a Food Forrest?

Inspired by farming games such as Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, I decided to spend my spare time building up a food forrest.

I began with vegetables but found lots burnt due to the strong sun in Summer, so went back to basics and built up a layer of trees. Now I’m working on adding vines, berries and herbs before planting vegetables again.

Trees

I’ve planted trees in the garden to provide shade for any berries and vegetables that we will be planting in future.

Trees included:

  • Apricot

  • Almond

  • Avocado

  • Bay Leaf

  • Cumquat

  • Lemon

  • Mandarin

  • Nashi Pear

  • Nectarine

  • Orange

  • Pear (dwarf)

  • Persimmon

  • Plum

Vines

I’m currently building up the Vines layer of the garden. Everything is in the early stage here.

Vines included:

  • Grapes

  • Kiwi (Male/Female)

  • Passionfruit

Berries

I’m also building up the berries layer. Why berries? Because I have kids and they love them!

Berries included:

  • Blueberries

  • Blackberries

  • Raspberries

  • Strawberries

HERBS

Herbs are tricky to grow in this backyard. The frost of winter and summer sun tend to dry out the herbs; keen for anyone’s advice on how to make them thrive!

  • Basil

  • Coriander

  • Lavender

  • Mint

  • Parsley

  • Thyme
